Old business: John Schmitt reminded members to vote by 7/25 on the proposed Doctor of Nursing Practice program from South Alabama. He also reiterated the importance of participation by institutions when a vote is required for a new program.  This effort includes circulating program proposals to appropriate departments at institutions. In the past, ACHE members have also emphasized the importance of voting.  There was some discussion of considering more presentations to the Council, about which Council members can make their opinions known when casting their online votes.

New business:  There was discussion suggesting that an institution might be using its bachelor’s-degree granting status to grant degrees at community colleges. This issue has been tabled for consideration by the new Executive Director of ACHE.  Some members also stressed that it is important to be active in discussions involving the establishment of university centers in Alabama.

On behalf of the ACGD, Dr. Bill Carr presented a plaque to Dr. Ron Rogers of The University of Alabama.  On the occasion of Dr. Rogers’ July 31, 2006 retirement, the plaque commemorated his outstanding service to the organization.

Roundtable discussion—“Dual-Enrollment Undergraduate/Graduate” (introduced by Chandra Reddy)
Dr. Reddy provided a handout that consisted of six discussion items related to dual enrollment courses. A lengthy discussion ensued about the various issues/concerns associated with dual enrollment in light of graduate-education concerns and SACS requirements.

Other business:  A draft copy of the calendar for upcoming meetings was disseminated by John Schmitt. The next Executive Board Meeting is scheduled for October 4, 2006, location to be determined, and to be presided over by incoming Chair Dr. Debra Moriarty of UAH.  The next Council meeting is scheduled for November 1, 2006.

John Schmitt thanked the members for their hard work during his second term as chair and wished Dr. Moriarty all the best as her term begins October 1, 2006.
